Turdus Solitarius

The Solitary Thrush

Abbreviation:Tur
Genitive:Turdi Solitarii
Origin:Pierre Charles Le Monnier, 1776

French astronomer Pierre Charles Le Monnier (1715–1799) placed an extinct flightless bird on the tail of Hydra and called it Turdus Solitarius in honour of the 'Rodrigues solitaire' which was closely related to the equally extinct dodo. It was replaced by Alexander Jamieson's Noctua but now both constellations are extinct.
