Obituary : Julia Conrad

Jackson County has lost another of its old time and pioneer residents in the passing away of Mrs. Julia Conrad Hardie, the wife of the later Mr. Thomas Hardie of the town of North Bend. Mrs. Julia Hardie, was born May 9, 1856, in Hardie's Creek, near Glasgow, Wisconsin; the second oldest child in a family of seven children, which includes five sisters and one brother, Frank Conrad, passed away during the early part of this fall. While a child, she was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Wisconsin. On November 3, 1880, she was happily united in marriage to Mr. Thomas Hardie, also of Glasgow, Wisconsin. This happy union was blessed with seven children; four girls and three boys, namely: Mrs. Dora Patterson, Miss Mae Hardie, Mrs. Myrtle Langston, Mrs. Florence Wilson, Raymond, Frank, and William Hardie, of which Mae, Raymond, William, and Frank Hardie survive. With Mr. Hardie, Mrs. Hardie by Confession of Faith, united with the Presbyterian Church, of North Bend, Wisconsin, on February 21, 1909, where she has proven her love for her Master, by the love for her comembers in deed and truth. She has always proven herself, a hard-working, self-sacrificing woman; nothing has ever been too hard to do, for either her children, neighbors or friends. Above all, she has stood out among all these who knew her, as a wonderful mother and friend. In addition to the raising of her own fine family, Mrs. Hardie, has also mothered her oldest daughter's motherless babe, Dorothy Patterson, whom she has had during the past six years. Her illness lasted approximately two months, during which time, she has suffered intensely. From the beginning of her illness and confinement in bed, she daily desired the reading of God's word, which was very precious to her, of which the Fourteenth Chapter of the Gospel according to John, was a precious portion, and oft would she want to hear of the words of him who has said; "In my Fathers house, are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. That where I am, Ye may be also." And then, she would like to hear some of the old hymns sung, especially "Abide with Me," "Lead, Kindly Light," "My Jesus, as Thou Wilt." Again she would yearn and long to go the "The Mansion Prepare for her, and to be with Jesus." But throughout her intense suffering, she was always patient, and forbearing, never once complaining. Her illness which was due to the contraction of bronchial pneumonia, came suddenly and unexpectedly to an end, when she received her call from the lips of her blessed Lord, which came five minutes past ten, Friday evening, January 8, 1926, to come to the Mansion Prepared for Her, and to be with her Lord forevermore. The day previous to her passing away, she seemed so much better, and everything seemed to tend towards her recovery, but the Lord had a better plan for her, and end of her earthly pilgrimage came suddenly after a short severe struggle, which soon settled to an infinite calmness of both body, soul, and spirit. When the end came, Mrs. Hardie had arrived to the ripe age of 69 years, 7 months, and 29 days. Mr. Hardie preceded Mrs. Hardie to the heavenly home twelve years ago. In addition to the three sons and one daughter, she is survived and mourned by five sisters; Mrs. Louisa Young, of Burr Oak, Wisconsin; Mrs. H.H. Young, of Oakland, California; Mrs. Charles Thorp, of Sandpoint, Idaho; Mrs. Thomas Powell, of Culbertson, Montana, Mrs. Oscar Marshall, of North Bend, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Conrad, of Glasgow, Wisconsin; eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Hardie has all of her life, lived in the vicinity of Galesville and North Bend, Wisconsin. Monday afternoon, January 11th, shortly after one o'clock, after a brief service in the home for the immediate family and relatives, the body was followed to the Presbyterian Church of North Bend, where the funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. A quartette, consisting of Mrs. Fritz Young, Mrs. John Tibbitts, Mr. Irvine Baird, and Rev. Sandine, sang Mrs. Hardie's favorite hymns, "Abide With Me" and "My Jesus as Thou Wilt;" while Rev. Sandine sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Miss Meta Marshall accompanied both on the piano. The remainder of the service was very simple and only included the reading of comforting passages of scripture, a short message by the pastor, Rev. H.B. Sandine, and the body was then carried to its final resting place in the North Bend Cemetery, awaiting the sounding of the trumpet of God, when the dead in Christ shall rise first, and those that are alive shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore, beloved, let us comfort one another with these words. In spite of the very cold weather and the bad condition of the roads, the church was well crowded for the services, and quite a number of friends followed on up to the cemetery. The funeral was conducted in a befitting manner which Mr. Frank H. Smith has built up his undertaking and funeral directing business, and won for himself many friends. The many friends of the Hardies, in the North Bend, Galesville, and Melrose communities, extend their most heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved and surviving relatives of Mrs. Hardie.

Card of Thanks

We wish to express our gratitude to all those who so kindly assisted us during the illness and death of our beloved mother. We are especially grateful to Rev. Sandine for his words of hope and encouragement, to the quartette, and to those whose sympathy was expressed in floral offerings.
