Obituary : Emma Lonsdale

Mrs. Emma Smith

Services were held Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 10 at the Hayes Funeral Home for Mrs. Emma Smith, former longtime Centralia resident, who died Nov. 88 at Atchison. The Rev. Glen L. Argo officiated. A men's quartet composed of Emet Hightower, George Pollman, Earl Roberts and George Young, accompanied by Mrs. George Young sang. Pallbearers were Raymond Blair, Wlliam Horalek, Martin Langsdorf, Elza Lockard, Walter Smith, and Herman Schmidt. Interment was in the family lot in the Centralia cemetery. Emma, daughter of James and Julia Denny Lonsdale, was born Oct. 23, 1864 at Shoals, Ind. and died in Atchison Nov. 8, 1953. When she was a small child her parents moved to Eskridge, Kansas where they operated a farm until her father's death. The family then came to Centralia and after a few years, in 1882, Emma was married to Edwin Smith, a prominent farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with their family, lived on their farm southwest of Centralia until Mr. Smith's health failed. They then moved to Centralia where they lived until his death. Mrs. Smith continued to make her home in Centralia until 1949 until illness made it impossible for her to live alone. Since that time she was with her children, or under their supervision, until her death. Her life was a busy, useful one. Her home, her family, her flowers, her fancy work, never failed to interest her and her friends were many. She was a sincere Christian, and a regular attendant at the Centralia Congregational church, aiding in its support. She was a member since 1925 and was an active participant in the Missionary Society and Social Union, also belonged to the W.H. Club. Surviving are her sons, Charles M. of Billings, Mont.; William M. of Atchison; and her daughter, Jennie M. Labbe of Onaga, a step-daughter, Mrs. Mollie Thornton of Hutchinson. A daughter Julia May, preceded her in death less than a year ago.
